Description An account of the resource This is a digital collection of the photographic works of Peter B. Hoffman, Jr. A Dubuque native, he was born on October 28, 1889 and was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery after he died on December 14, 1953. His parents were Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. and Katherine (Nickels) Hoffmann. His father's parents immigrated from Luxembourg to Ohio, where he was born, and shortly thereafter to Dubuque. Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. was a grocer, historian and politician. His mother's parents immigrated directly from Luxembourg to Dubuque and were considered "pioneer" residents of the city. There are two smaller, lighter colored crosses with darker squares in the center. Towards the right are slightly taller crosses with squares in the center. The squares may have the names of those who are deceased. Behind the cemetery are the remains of war torn buildings that do not have any roofs and much of the walls are completely gone. There are also wooden planks that are set up against the walls of the war torn buildings. The ground of the cemetery seems to be charred and a darker color than the rest of the ground. The building is 2 stories. The bottom has a stone wall with various colored stones. There is a small doorway in the center with an angled roof. On the right side there is a small pathway that leads up to the building and extends the length of the bottom of the photograph. The pathway is dirt and has tracks in it. The windows to the building are wide open and do not have screens in front of them. Two windows on the right have shutters over them, with a few pieces broken out. On the second floor, there is a window with one shutter on it that appears to be partially falling off. The roof is clay shingles and there are two chimney on the roof.
