The Irish attended Saint James Church at Toronto in Clinton County, which had a resident priest. The Bohemians went to Holy Trinity Church in Baldwin, where a visiting Bohemian priest celebrated Mass once a month. When the Bohemians and the Irish joined and decided to build a church in Oxford Junction, John Quick and his wife donated an acre of land. The church was named Saint Mary. Title A name given to the resource Sacred Heart (Rockwell, Iowa) Description An account of the resource "When Father Kelly left in 1887, Father Lawrence H. Burns came to stay for 27 years. He directed the building of a much larger church in 1893, dedicated to the Sacred Heart in November 1893 by Bishop Joseph B. Cotter of Winona, Minnesota. In 1897 five Sisters of the Holy Ghost came from Dubuque to open a school for about 60 pupils in the remodeled parish hall. The Holy Ghost community planned to locate their motherhouse in Rockwell and use the large structure being built. But they changed their plans, and the Sinsinawa Dominicans agreed to take over the school as an independent academy. Father John McMahon became the first resident pastor of St. Anthony and celebrated the first Mass in the new church on Christmas morning of 1893. Description An account of the resource “The citizens of the community first sought to build a parish church in 1885 and subscribed $1,305. Of the 85 subscribers on the March 5, 1885, list about forty were not Catholic. In 1887 Father Peter O’Dowd, the Independence pastor, came to Walker at the request of several Catholic families to discuss further the possibility of building a Catholic church in Walker. Nagle was pastor of Saint Boniface Parish in Garner from 1893 to 1903 and a missionary to a large area, he visited the Catholics of Woden in Hancock County about every month. Mass was usually celebrated in the home of John Quinn, southeast of Woden. During the last years of Father Nagle’s care they built a small frame church. Description An account of the resource This is a digital collection of the photographic works of Peter B. Hoffman, Jr. A Dubuque native, he was born on October 28, 1889 and was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery after he died on December 14, 1953. His parents were Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. and Katherine (Nickels) Hoffmann. His father's parents immigrated from Luxembourg to Ohio, where he was born, and shortly thereafter to Dubuque. Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. was a grocer, historian and politician. His mother's parents immigrated directly from Luxembourg to Dubuque and were considered "pioneer" residents of the city. The couple had seven children: Edward M., Albert D., Alvina M., Frank Charle, Vincent, Bertha K., and Peter B. Jr. The family was Catholic. Peter B. Jr. married Barbara R. Bungert sometime between 1915 and 1925, and they had one daughter, Rosalyn Marie. Peter worked in his father's store as a grocer clerk and continued in the grocery business throughout his life; he was also drafted in WWI and WWII. Although he is never named as the person taking the photos, the pictures contain multiple images of Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr., leading to the conclusion that his son was the photographer. (Note: The name "Hoffmann" appears with both one and two "n"s throughout the family and newspaper accounts.) Contributor An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource Reilly, Sydney Description An account of the resource Sacred Heart Church, Holy Spirit Parish, located on the corner of 22nd Street and Windsor Avenue in Dubuque. This is a brick church on the right of the photo. There are two steeples with crosses at the top: the left steeple is shorter than the right. In the middle of the two steeples in a triangle roofed arch with another cross at the point of the roof. The right steeple has a clock in the tower. Both steeples have a zigzag pattern at the base of the spire. The church is facing 22nd street and from the street, there is a sidewalk and a metal fence around the property of the church. To the left of the church is an open flat field with a leafless tree close to the sidewalk. The gates have openings in front of the church and a walkway from the sidewalk up to the three sets of staircases which lead to the three doors to enter the church. Each of the doors is open and each has an arched entryway above the doors. Two doors are below each of the two steeples, and the middle door is under the triangle arched roof.
