Hoffmann, Sr. and Katherine (Nickels) Hoffmann. His father's parents immigrated from Luxembourg to Ohio, where he was born, and shortly thereafter to Dubuque. Peter B. The ground in front of the dugout is cleared of trees, but the trees surround the sides and the back of the dugout. There is an Allied solder sitting on a bench and looking towards the photographer. He is wearing his cap and uniform, as well as a long coat that covers his knees. His left leg is extended forward and his right is bent. There is a door that leads into the dugout, which enters into the German bunkers. Outside of the dugout is a stone wall. The photographer is on top of a hill with dead grass. In the distance, and at the bottom of the hill, is presumably Vilcoy, France. It is a small village with a church in the middle of the photograph and surrounding buildings. Some of the buildings do not have roofs and some of the trees in town do not have any leaves. Behind the village is another hill and open grasslands. A road runs through the town by the church and disappears behind buildings.
