The right side of the photograph shows a waterway. There is a wooden or metal object sticking out of the water and floating or standing in the water. The opposite side of the bank can be seen and is grassy with a few, leafless trees in the background. The right and front of the photograph shows a bank with debris scattered all over it, including pieces of wood. The bridge extends from the left to the right center of the photograph. The left side has a small hill that is hiding part of a stone wall that was a part of the bridge. The stone wall soon turns into a skeleton of wood frames that is holding up the walkway of the bridge. This is the part that all the debris looks to be from that is sitting in front of it in the water and on the bank. The wooden frame then turns into a stone bridge that has 5 arches underneath and within the stone for an arched architectural bit. In between each arch, by the water level is a circular stone piece out from the face of the wall. There are electrical poles before the first arch on the left and in between the 3rd and 4th arches on the bridge. There are also electrical poles that can be seen on the other side of the bridge. The top of the bridge has a wooden fence that extends from the left to the middle and then the fence turns into stone. The building on the left of the photograph is a stone buildings. Much of the side and walls, facing outwards, are completely gone with just the remains and debris laying on the floor of the building. It appears to be a 3-story building by looking through the side of the wall. A partial chimney is visible on the right side of the building. The roof is a square roof that is pointed upwards in the middle. Debris also lays on the ground at the first floor where a waterway is rushing through. There is a second building to the right that is stone as well. This building has a corner of the walls taken out that is facing the photographer. The roof is also a square roof that meets in the middle and points upwards. This building appears to be 3 levels as well and the top level has very small windows. There is a wooden bridge that goes from the middle of the photograph to the right, over a waterway. The bridge does not seem to have much damage, but appears as if it was built quickly with wooden beams crossing each other haphazardly. The church has taken damage from a battle at Sassey-sur-Meuse during World War I. The roof of the church has large square chunks taken from it. The walls on the side of the church are partially gone, with much of the top missing. There are bricks that are missing from the steeple. The building in front has paint coming off the stones. The stone has writing at the bottom which is too difficult to distinguish from either the natural elements or destruction from World War I. The stone is inside of a metal fence that has arrow points at the top of each post. There is an opening in the middle front. Behind the stone is a hill and at the top there are two posts with a larger rounded rectangle at the top of the posts. The photograph mentions it is in Sassey, France. Description An account of the resource This is a digital collection of the photographic works of Peter B. Hoffman, Jr. A Dubuque native, he was born on October 28, 1889 and was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery after he died on December 14, 1953. His parents were Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. and Katherine (Nickels) Hoffmann. His father's parents immigrated from Luxembourg to Ohio, where he was born, and shortly thereafter to Dubuque. Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. was a grocer, historian and politician. His mother's parents immigrated directly from Luxembourg to Dubuque and were considered "pioneer" residents of the city. The couple had seven children: Edward M., Albert D., Alvina M., Frank Charle, Vincent, Bertha K., and Peter B. Jr. The family was Catholic. Peter B. Jr. married Barbara R. Bungert sometime between 1915 and 1925, and they had one daughter, Rosalyn Marie. Peter worked in his father's store as a grocer clerk and continued in the grocery business throughout his life; he was also drafted in WWI and WWII. Although he is never named as the person taking the photos, the pictures contain multiple images of Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr., leading to the conclusion that his son was the photographer. (Note: The name "Hoffmann" appears with both one and two "n"s throughout the family and newspaper accounts.) Contributor An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource Reilly, Sydney Description An account of the resource A bridge that extends over the Meuse River, near Sassey, France during World War I. The bridge is on the right of the photograph and extends back. The photographer is standing on one bank of the river. The bridge is made of stone and has 5 arches that are underneath the main walkway of the stone bridge. There are round stone pieces in between each of the arches. In between the 2nd and 3rd arches is an electrical pole that stands above the bridge walkway. After the last arch is another electrical pole. the Meuse River runs through the arches. Debris is scattered underneath the back side of the bridge on the opposite bank. There is a building behind the bridge that has taken damage from a battle of World War I. There also appears to be a church in the far background that is missing square pieces of roof and has holes in the side of it. There are also electrical poles scattered around the buildings that are on the opposite bank.
